Kolkata, March 23: The office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has reported that the judicial decision process for 2,806,000 cases has been completed. This information was made available by the CEO’s office by Sunday night. The first supplementary list will categorize these cases as “approved” and “rejected.”
An insider from the CEO’s office revealed that approximately 34 percent of the cases found voters eligible to be excluded from voting. However, voters identified for exclusion will have the opportunity to challenge this in 19 specially constituted appellate tribunals.
It is noteworthy that the final voter list, which removed nearly 6 million names sent for judicial review, was published on February 28. Following the Supreme Court’s directive, supplementary lists will be published periodically based on the progress of judicial decisions, with the first list set to be released on Monday.
This list is expected to reach district magistrates and district electoral officers by Monday afternoon. Voters can check the additional list on the Election Commission of India (ECI) website starting Monday evening. The supplementary list will also be displayed at polling booths, Block Development Offices (BDOs), Sub-Divisional Offices (SDOs), and District Magistrate offices.
In accordance with the Election Commission’s instructions, the state police administration has already implemented all possible security measures to prevent any incidents of tension or violence following the publication of the first supplementary list.
A security meeting was held at the commission office on Sunday. Manoj Kumar Agarwal, the Chief Executive Officer of West Bengal, convened a meeting with the joint forces deployment committee to discuss the deployment of central forces for the upcoming assembly elections.
Sources from the CEO’s office indicated that plans were made regarding where and how many security personnel would be deployed, as well as how the units would operate.
Present at the meeting were Anand Kumar, the nodal officer of the state police, special police supervisor N.K. Mishra, central forces nodal officer Shalabh Mathur, and Gaurav Sharma.
Meanwhile, top officials from the ECI will hold a high-level virtual meeting on Monday afternoon with district magistrates, district police superintendents, and various police commissioners at the commission’s headquarters in New Delhi.
Voting for the West Bengal assembly elections will occur in two phases on April 23 and April 29. The first phase will cover 152 constituencies, while the second phase will include the remaining 142 constituencies.
