West Bengal Election Commission Takes Action After Violence, Suspends Police Officer

Kolkata, March 28: The Election Commission has directed West Bengal’s Chief Secretary, Dushyant Nariyala, to immediately suspend Inspector-in-Charge Avijit Paul of the Basanti police station in South 24 Parganas. This decision follows violent clashes that occurred in the area on March 26.

A police sub-inspector was reportedly assaulted by a group of individuals allegedly linked to the ruling Trinamool Congress.

In a letter from Shakti Sharma, Under Secretary of the Election Commission, it was noted that despite prior knowledge of potential unrest, adequate security measures were not implemented.

The letter also highlighted that central armed police forces had been available in recent days, yet Inspector Paul failed to request their assistance to maintain law and order. The Election Commission deemed this a serious lapse in duty and negligence.

The Commission has mandated that Avijit Paul be suspended immediately and that departmental action be initiated against him. Prabir Ghosh from the West Bengal Police Enforcement Branch has been appointed to take over his responsibilities.

The Chief Secretary has been instructed to implement this order promptly and submit a report to the Commission by 9 PM on Friday.

Earlier, Amit Malviya, head of the BJP’s IT cell and central observer for West Bengal, accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of inciting violence with her remarks. He claimed that during a rally in Pandaveswar, the Chief Minister urged her supporters to “arm themselves,” shortly before tensions escalated in Basanti.

He also alleged that the local police remained passive during the violence.
