
Hyderabad, February 11: Voting is currently taking place in Telangana for municipal elections across 116 municipalities and seven corporations, under tight security.
The State Election Commission (SEC) officials reported that polling began at 7 AM and will conclude at 5 PM across 8,191 polling stations. A total of 5,217,413 voters are eligible to cast their votes in 2,981 wards of 123 urban local bodies.
To facilitate the voting process, the SEC has deployed 1,379 returning officers and 41,773 polling staff. Live webcasting has been arranged at all polling stations.
State Election Commissioner Rani Kumudini urged all voters to exercise their right to vote. Voters can download their voter slips through the SEC website or the TE-Poll app.
In this election, a total of 12,944 candidates are contesting for political positions. Voting is taking place for 2,569 wards across 116 municipalities, with twelve candidates elected unopposed in nine municipalities.
Following the suicide of a BJP candidate on Monday night, the SEC has postponed voting in a ward of the Makthal municipality in Narayanpet district.
In total, 10,719 candidates are contesting across the 116 municipalities. This includes 2,358 candidates from the ruling Congress party, 2,478 from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and 2,252 from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Officials have established 6,017 polling stations for the municipalities, while voting is also taking place in 412 wards of the seven municipal corporations. Two wards in Mahbubnagar and Ramagundam have seen candidates elected unopposed.
For the seven municipal corporations, 2,174 polling stations have been set up, with a total of 2,225 candidates contesting. This includes 410 from Congress, 401 from BRS, and 382 from BJP.
Director General of Police B. Shivadhar Reddy stated that stringent security measures have been implemented for the elections. Approximately 3,000 additional police personnel have been deployed to maintain law and order.
The police have classified 1,302 polling stations as highly problematic and 1,926 as problematic, with extra forces assigned to these locations. If necessary, re-polling will occur on Thursday, with vote counting scheduled for the following day. Elections for municipal chairpersons and vice-chairpersons will take place on February 16.
