Guwahati, September 6 (Daily Kiran) : Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan participated in the Golden Jubilee celebration of Geeta Nagar College in Guwahati on Sunday, September 6, 2026. During the event, he inaugurated the college’s new academic building. The institution was formerly known as Kanya Mahavidyalaya.
In his address, Radhakrishnan congratulated the college on reaching its 50-year milestone. He highlighted the significant contributions of Geeta Nagar College to the educational and social development of Assam over the past five decades, particularly in empowering generations of young women through education.
The Vice President praised Assam for its rich cultural heritage. He noted that the state has enhanced India’s cultural landscape through its languages, literature, music, dance, and indigenous traditions. Remembering the valor of warrior Lachit Borphukan, he described his legacy as a symbol of Assam’s courage and commitment to preserving its heritage, serving as an inspiration for the entire nation.
Radhakrishnan emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has prioritized the development of the Northeast region. He stated that Assam possesses immense potential due to its natural resources, forests, and world-renowned tea, and is currently undergoing a new phase of development.
Stressing the importance of education, the Vice President remarked that higher education institutions should not only prepare students for careers but also cultivate responsible citizens aware of democracy, constitutional values, and social responsibilities.
During the ceremony, he administered an oath to students to reject drugs. He urged the youth to stay away from substance abuse and encourage their friends to do the same, emphasizing the need to protect their time, health, and future.
Radhakrishnan underscored that India’s youthful population is the country’s greatest asset, with vast opportunities in fields such as artificial intelligence, digital technology, biotechnology, space research, and entrepreneurship, which will enable them to play a leading role in building a developed India.
He commended the progress of Assam under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, noting that the state has become one of the fastest-growing economies in recent years. Significant investments are being made in health, education, infrastructure, employment, and the development of tea plantation communities.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Education Minister Dr. Ranoj Pegu. The Vice President is on a four-day visit to Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh from September 6 to 9.
