Vibrant Celebrations of Rangbhari Ekadashi in Kashi

Varanasi, February 27: The festival of Rangbhari Ekadashi fills the holy city of Kashi with vibrant joy. Celebrated on the eleventh day of the waxing moon in the month of Phalgun, it occurs just four days before Holi. According to tradition, on this day, Lord Vishwanath brings Goddess Parvati from her parental home to Kashi.

The entire city immerses itself in devotion, colors, and flowers. As per ancient beliefs, on Rangbhari Ekadashi, Lord Shiva arrives in Kashi with a wedding procession for Goddess Gauri. This age-old tradition prompts the residents of Kashi to warmly welcome Lord Vishwanath and Goddess Parvati. The streets resonate with chants of “Namah Parvati Pataye, Har-Har Mahadev.”

While preparations for Holi take place worldwide, in Kashi, devotees seek permission from the deities to start the festivities. They shower the gods with gulal, abir, and flowers. Temples are adorned, lamps are lit, and a joyful atmosphere prevails throughout the city.

On this day, a grand procession takes place at the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The palanquin carrying Lord Vishwanath and Goddess Parvati traverses the streets, drenching the area in colors. Vishwabhushan Mishra, the Chief Executive Officer of the temple, stated that barricades will be set up, ensuring tight security. There will be no direct contact for devotees this year. Notably, the traditional Ras dance from Mathura-Braj will also be showcased in Kashi, with Rasiyas and color players arriving to participate.

Prabhunath Tripathi, a resident of Kashi, shared that locals celebrate the arrival of Baba and Mata alongside the deities. In this long-standing tradition, devotees seek permission to play Holi by offering colors. On this day, Lord Shiva also takes Goddess Parvati on a tour of her in-laws’ home.

From a religious perspective, special rituals are performed for the worship of Shiva and Parvati on Rangbhari Ekadashi. It is believed that praying on this day helps individuals find their desired life partner and alleviates many life challenges. Every temple in Kashi is beautifully decorated for the occasion.
