Veteran Actress Soukar Janakis Last Rites to Be Held in Chennai, Chiranjeevi Pays Tribute

Chennai, August 22: The last rites of Padma Shri award-winning actress Soukar Janaki will take place on Saturday afternoon. She passed away on Friday at 2 PM due to age-related illnesses.

Her grandson, Arvind, informed the media that family members have gathered at her mother’s home in Chennai to pay their final respects. The cremation will be held at the Besant Nagar crematorium.

He stated, “Members of the public can pay their tributes starting Saturday morning, and we plan to conduct the cremation by late afternoon.”

Born on December 12, 1931, Soukar Janaki, whose real name was Shankaramanchi Janaki, was one of South India’s most celebrated actresses. Over her illustrious career spanning seven decades, she appeared in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam cinema.

Her family includes three children, four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Telugu megastar Chiranjeevi expressed his sorrow over the passing of the legendary actress.

In a heartfelt message on X, he conveyed his deep sadness at the news of her demise. He highlighted her remarkable film journey, which began with the film “Shavukaru” and lasted nearly seven decades across various languages. Chiranjeevi noted that Soukar Janaki brought life to diverse characters with her natural acting, earning a special place in the hearts of audiences.

He remarked, “She was a great actress whose contributions to the Indian film industry will always be remembered.” Chiranjeevi also prayed for the peace of her soul and extended his heartfelt condolences to her family and fans.
