His last rites were performed on Monday evening at the Santacruz crematorium in Mumbai, attended by close family members and friends.

Asrani, fondly known as one of Indian cinema’s longest-serving comedians, enjoyed a career spanning over five decades and appeared in more than 350 films across multiple languages, including Hindi, Gujarati, and Rajasthani.

A graduate of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, Asrani began his career in the mid-1960s, initially performing in serious and supporting roles. However, his natural flair for comedy soon established him as one of Bollywood’s most beloved comic actors during the 1970s and 1980s.

Known for his expressive face and perfect comic timing, Asrani often portrayed endearing, bumbling characters such as clerks, assistants, and everyday men caught in humorous predicaments.

He delivered unforgettable performances in cult classics such as ‘Sholay’ — where he played the iconic jailer parodying Hitler — and ‘Chupke Chupke’, both of which remain fan favorites to this day.

In addition to acting, Asrani also directed a few Hindi and Gujarati films and worked alongside industry stalwarts such as Mahmood, Rajesh Khanna, and Govinda, contributing to some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable comedic moments.

Beyond comedy, Asrani demonstrated his dramatic range in films like ‘Aaj Ki Taza Khabar’ and ‘Chala Murari Hero Banne’, showcasing his versatility as an actor.

With his passing, Indian cinema has lost a true pillar of comedy and character artistry, whose work continues to bring smiles to generations of film lovers.
