Veda Krishnamurthy Highlights Key Lessons from Indias T20 Victory Over Zimbabwe
Veda Krishnamurthy emphasizes the importance of learning from mistakes after Indias T20 win against Zimbabwe, praising young talent Nikki Prasad.

New Delhi, October 17 (Daily Kiran) : Former Indian women’s cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy believes that the Indian batsmen’s early dismissals against Zimbabwe’s spinners in the first T20 match should serve as a significant lesson for the team. She stressed the importance of learning from this performance to better prepare for upcoming matches.
Krishnamurthy pointed out that the Indian team must never underestimate any bowling attack. She expressed hope that the batsmen would correct their mistakes in the second T20 match scheduled for Sunday, playing with greater responsibility against spin bowling.
In the first match held at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, India successfully chased down a target of 115 runs, recovering from a precarious position of 19 for 4. They achieved victory with 26 balls to spare, thanks to Deepti Sharma‘s 49 runs and Nikki Prasad‘s unbeaten 39.
According to Veda, the Indian batsmen took time to adjust to the slower bowlers. She noted that this experience would aid their preparation for the next match. “India lost a few wickets early on. It takes time to adapt to slower bowlers, and that’s exactly what happened. Indian batsmen typically train against fast bowlers, given their experience against teams like Australia and England. However, this match was an eye-opener for them. There’s no doubt about the top-order players’ capabilities, but I’m confident they will come back better prepared for the next game,” she said.
After Smriti Mandhana hit two boundaries in the first over, India’s top order faltered. Nyasha Gwanzura dismissed Mandhana and Anushka Sharma, while Michelle Mavunga sent Harmanpreet Kaur back to the pavilion. Shafali Verma also fell victim to Gwanzura, leaving India in a tough spot at 19 for 4 within four overs.
Following this, Deepti and Nikki formed a crucial partnership, scoring 82 runs for the fifth wicket off 63 balls, rescuing India from a potential defeat. Veda praised Deepti for taking responsibility during a challenging time and allowing the debutant Nikki to settle in.
“This was a fantastic partnership, especially when wickets are falling. You need an experienced player to take charge. Deepti Sharma is a very versatile batsman, and her left-right combination confuses the bowlers. Deepti’s aggressive batting allowed Nikki Prasad to understand the situation,” Veda remarked.
Krishnamurthy added, “Deepti took all the pressure on herself and dominated the bowlers, making it easier for Nikki to build her innings in the middle overs. Both Deepti and Nikki have played a lot of domestic cricket in recent years, which helps them adapt to bowlers and different conditions.” Deepti fell just one run short of a half-century, while Nikki remained unbeaten at 39, sealing the victory with a boundary. Veda was particularly impressed by the composure Nikki displayed in her first international innings.
Praising Nikki, Veda stated, “Nikki Prasad delivered an outstanding performance as a batsman and cricketer. At just 20 years old, she showed maturity and composure like an experienced player. This is why she was able to handle the pressure and play such an innings. I remember her debut in the Women’s Premier League, where she faced a similar situation and made a strong start. Considering India’s top order, she might have thought she would bat later, but conditions changed rapidly. When things shift so quickly, a batsman has little time to think. Their focus is entirely on what needs to be done at that moment.”
