Varanasi, March 1: A remarkable achievement was recorded in Varanasi, the parliamentary constituency of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday. According to officials, more than 250,000 trees were planted in less than an hour, breaking the previous record held by China.
This historic milestone has been officially recognized by Guinness World Records. Rishi Nath, an official and judge from Guinness, was present to hand over the certificate to Varanasi’s Mayor Ashok Kumar Tiwari and Municipal Commissioner Himanshu Nagpal, confirming the record.
The Varanasi Municipal Corporation established this record by planting 251,446 saplings in the Sujabad-Domri area, designated for a new forest. An official stated, “Today, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation initiated a historic effort in Prime Minister Modi’s constituency. Over 250,000 saplings were planted in less than an hour, with the participation of more than 20,000 citizens. This is an excellent example of public involvement.”
Previously, the record for the most trees planted in one hour was held by the Henan Provincial Committee of China, which planted 153,981 trees in 2018.
The official added, “Kashi (Varanasi) surpassed this record through meticulous planning, extensive public participation, and the use of modern technology. The entire process was accurately monitored using drone surveillance and a digital counting system.”
The Varanasi Municipal Corporation is developing a vast urban forest named “Namo Van,” which will cover approximately 350 bighas of land near the banks of the Ganges in the Domri area.
Under this project, a total of 300,000 saplings will be planted, including 250,000 using the Miyawaki method, 10,000 timber trees, and 40,000 fruit-bearing trees.
Additionally, the project will feature a 4-kilometer walking path, a plaza for meditation and yoga, a 4-hectare flower park, a 2-hectare herbal park, play areas for children, and an open gym plaza.
This forest will enhance biodiversity, strengthen the Ganges’ banks, and improve ecological balance. The municipal corporation anticipates generating an annual income of around 20 million rupees from this project by the third year, which could increase to 70 million rupees by the seventh year.
Plans are also in place to establish a naturopathy plaza in the future.
