Lucknow, July 30: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government is actively working to provide social security to vulnerable and marginalized communities. In this effort, the Leprosy Pension Scheme by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities has become a crucial financial support for individuals affected by leprosy-related disabilities.
Eligible beneficiaries are receiving regular pensions under this scheme. In the first quarter of the financial year 2026-27, over 13,000 eligible individuals have benefited from the Leprosy Pension Scheme.
Dr. Amit Kumar Rai, Deputy Director of the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, reported that a total of 13,734 individuals affected by leprosy have been supported under the scheme during this period. The government has spent 123.1 million rupees (12.31 crore rupees) in this timeframe, providing financial assistance of 3,000 rupees per month to eligible beneficiaries.
The aim of the Leprosy Pension Scheme is to provide financial support to disabled individuals and those affected by leprosy whose family income is insufficient for their sustenance. This initiative is not limited to financial aid; it also plays a significant role in helping beneficiaries lead dignified lives and integrate into the mainstream society. Individuals affected by any level of disability due to leprosy are eligible under this scheme.
The percentage of disability does not hinder eligibility for this scheme. A disability certificate issued by the Chief Medical Officer of the respective district is required for eligibility. Additionally, applicants must be residents of Uttar Pradesh, have a family annual income not exceeding 200,000 rupees, and should not be receiving benefits from any other government pension scheme.
Dr. Amit Kumar Rai emphasized that in line with Chief Minister Yogi’s vision, the department is ensuring that the benefits of the scheme reach every eligible individual in a timely, transparent, and effective manner, ensuring that no eligible applicant is left out of this vital social security initiative.
