Washington, March 2: The United States revealed the scale of Operation Epic Fury on Monday. This coordinated air, naval, cyber, and space campaign targeted over 1,000 sites in Iran within the first 24 hours. Thousands of personnel, carrier strike groups, and long-range bombers were involved.
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Air Force General Dan Can, stated that this operation is the culmination of months and years of planning. During a joint news conference at the Pentagon with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, General Can explained that more than 100 aircraft were launched from ground, sea, fighter jets, tankers, airborne early warning systems, electronic attack platforms, bombers, and unmanned systems.
He noted that the U.S. Central Command initiated the operation on February 28 at 01:15 AM Eastern Standard Time, following presidential approval. The initial phase involved a massive and overwhelming assault, striking over 1,000 targets within the first 24 hours.
General Can detailed the preparation of forces prior to the attacks. He mentioned that the joint force systematically redeployed assets and personnel in the region over the past 30 days to strengthen deterrence and provide reliable options should action be necessary.
This deployment included thousands of service members from all branches, hundreds of advanced fourth and fifth-generation fighters, dozens of refueling tankers, and the Lincoln and Ford carrier strike groups, all involved in continuous attacks with ammunition, fuel, and supplies.
He also emphasized the coordination of reserve and National Guard forces, highlighting the Wisconsin Army National Guard operating in Kuwait and Iraq, as well as the Vermont Air National Guard’s 158th Fighter Wing, which sent F-35A aircraft across the Atlantic to support the mission.
Can explained that the operation integrated kinetic strikes with cyber and space operations. The initial attackers were U.S. Cyber Command and U.S. Space Command, which disrupted and degraded Iran’s ability to observe, communicate, and respond.
American B-2 bombers conducted a 37-hour round-trip mission from the continental U.S., dropping bombs on underground sites. Over approximately 57 hours, the joint forces launched hundreds of missions from land and sea, delivering thousands of munitions.
Can mentioned friendly air defense batteries in Qatar, UAE, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, which participated in the operation, demonstrating that years of training, trust, and hard work yield beneficial coordination.
He concluded, “This work has just begun and will continue.”
