US Envoys Witkoff and Kushner Meet Netanyahu Amid Gaza Talks

New Delhi: Senior US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Israel to meet Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, focusing primarily on discussions related to Gaza. According to information shared by the Israeli War Room, the American diplomats are engaging with Israeli leadership to address ongoing issues in the region.

The Israeli War Room posted on the social media platform X that “Senior envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner have arrived in Israel for a meeting with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Additionally, CENTCOM Commander Admiral Bradley Cooper is expected to meet senior leaders of Israeli security.”

On Thursday, the United States announced a plan for a ‘New Gaza’ under the Israel-Hamas ceasefire framework. The plan includes the development of residential towers, data centres, and a seaside resort. Israeli media reported on Friday that Kushner and Witkoff would also discuss efforts to recover the remains of Ron Gwily, the last hostage held in Gaza, with Netanyahu.

The people of Israel have been urging the government not to advance to the next phase of the ceasefire until the remains of Ron Gwily are returned. Gwily’s family issued a statement highlighting President Donald Trump’s recent remarks in Davos, expressing surprise over misplaced pressure. The statement emphasised that the Israeli government should not be pressured to fulfil its part of the agreement while Hamas continues to deceive the world by refusing to return the last kidnapped individual as per the signed deal.

Furthermore, a US official and an Arab diplomat told The Times of Israel that the reopening of the Rafah crossing was a decision imposed on Israel. The Arab diplomat noted that the US, Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, who are mediating the Gaza ceasefire, acknowledged that Israel would not voluntarily agree to reopen the border gate between Egypt and Gaza.

The Arab diplomat explained that the decision to announce the reopening of Rafah was made during the Board of Peace signing ceremony held this week in Davos, Switzerland.
