US Ambassador Meets Bhutans King to Discuss Investment Opportunities

New Delhi, March 9: The US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, met with Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. The discussions focused on deepening the partnership between the United States and Bhutan, particularly in the realm of investment.

Ambassador Gor shared photos of the meeting on the social media platform X, stating, “I met with Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to discuss enhancing the US-Bhutan partnership and opportunities related to the Gallefu Mindfulness City initiative. Bhutan’s forward-looking perspective creates new avenues for investment, innovation, and collaboration with the United States.”

It’s noteworthy that there are currently no formal diplomatic relations between the US and Bhutan. However, the US provides assistance to Bhutan in health, education, disaster management, and sanitation through USAID. Given the strong ties between India and the US, discussions have intensified regarding the potential establishment of official relations between the US and Bhutan.

While Bhutan primarily trades with India, China, Singapore, and Thailand, the Borgon Project indicates that the US contributes to Bhutan’s development projects. In 2025, the US tightened its visa regulations, placing Bhutan on its travel restriction ‘Red List’ due to visa violations and national security concerns.

Recently, during the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in India, Bhutan’s Foreign Minister Lyonpo DN Dhungyel visited. He met with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, along with counterparts from Mauritius and Bhutan, to discuss strengthening partnerships.

Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the partnership between their nations. The Foreign Minister expressed his pleasure in meeting with Bhutan’s Foreign Minister on the social media platform X, agreeing to further enhance their special partnership.
