Unique Kanak Mahalaxmi Temple in Visakhapatnam: A Roofless Abode of Goddess Lakshmi

Discover the Kanak Mahalaxmi Temple in Visakhapatnam, where devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi under the open sky, especially during Diwali.

Visakhapatnam, November 2 (Daily Kiran) : As the festive spirit of Diwali approaches, celebrations are set to unfold across India on November 8. On this auspicious day, devotees will honor Goddess Lakshmi, seeking her blessings alongside Lord Ganesha. Homes will be adorned with clay lamps, flowers, and lights, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere to welcome the goddess and ensure prosperity.

Among the many temples dedicated to various deities in the country, the Kanak Mahalaxmi Temple in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, stands out for its unique charm and historical significance. This temple is dedicated to the form of Goddess Lakshmi known as Kanak Mahalaxmi, revered as the patron deity of the city. What makes this temple particularly special is its lack of a roof or dome, allowing worshippers to pay their respects to the goddess under the open sky. Legend has it that the idol of Goddess Lakshmi manifested itself at this site.

According to local beliefs, the idol was discovered in a well in 1912. However, when efforts for urban development led to its removal, a plague outbreak struck the city. In response to this calamity, the idol was reinstated at its original location, restoring peace to the community.

One of the temple’s distinguishing features is that devotees can perform their rituals independently, without the need for a priest. It is believed that those who approach the goddess with genuine faith and devotion will have their wishes fulfilled, receiving blessings of prosperity, safety, and happiness.

For the residents of Visakhapatnam, the Kanak Mahalaxmi Temple is more than just a place of worship; it symbolizes their identity, faith, and community unity. Each day, thousands flock to the temple to seek the goddess’s blessings and guidance.

Open from 5 AM to midnight, the temple transforms into a magnificent sight during Diwali, celebrated with great fervor and devotion.
