Understanding the Significance of Durga Saptashati Recitation During Navratri

New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Hindu festival of Sharadiya Navratri holds immense significance, celebrated with great fervor across India. This year, the festival begins on October 11. Over nine days, devotees worship the nine forms of Goddess Durga. During this period, the recitation of Durga Saptashati, also known as Devi Mahatmya or Chandi Path, is performed in homes and temples.

Durga Saptashati consists of 700 verses divided into 13 chapters and is part of the Markandeya Purana, authored by sage Vedavyasa. The term ‘Saptashati’ translates to ‘seven hundred,’ symbolizing the text’s structure. The scripture narrates the victory of Goddess Durga over demons like Mahishasura. Specific rituals, including Trayangam and Navangam, are followed for the proper recitation, which can be done over one, three, or seven sittings during Navratri.

Devotees believe that reciting Durga Saptashati daily or during Navratri brings numerous spiritual and personal benefits. The sacred verses inspire devotion, courage, and inner strength while providing a sense of protection against negativity. Many perform this recitation to maintain peace and harmony in their homes, distancing themselves from negative thoughts.

For an effective recitation, it’s essential to adhere to proper methods and purity. The recitation can be completed in one day or over the nine days of Navratri. A traditional approach is necessary for the correct recitation. Devotees can choose from various methods based on time, devotion, and occasion. For those needing assistance, they can follow two methods: Trayangam and Navangam.

To begin, devotees should lay a red cloth facing east and place an image or idol of Goddess Durga on it. Purify the space before starting the recitation with kumkum, rice, and flowers. Afterward, apply roli on the forehead and perform achaman four times to purify the elements.

Before starting the recitation, one should bathe and wear clean clothes. Focus on Goddess Durga while beginning the Durga Saptashati recitation, starting with the recitation of Durga Kavach. It is believed that one should not commence the Saptashati recitation without first reciting the Kavach. Light a lamp in front of the image of Goddess Durga. After completing the regular recitation, perform the aarti and seek forgiveness from Goddess Durga. Following the aarti, offer food or prasad, with the offering of sugar candies being particularly auspicious. After the aarti, distribute the prasad and pray for prosperity in the household.

The book of Durga Saptashati should always be kept covered on a platform with red cloth. During the recitation days, abstain from consuming non-vegetarian food, alcohol, garlic, and onions. Maintain complete celibacy and uphold physical and mental purity during the recitation. While reciting the Saptashati, avoid harboring negative feelings towards others.
