Uma Bharti Criticises Administration for Demanding Proof from Swami Avimukteshwaranand

Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Uma Bharti has strongly criticised the ongoing controversy surrounding Swami Avimukteshwaranand. She expressed her objection to the administration’s demand for proof of his status as Shankaracharya, calling it a violation of their own limits and authority.

On Tuesday, Uma Bharti wrote on the social media platform X that she hopes for a positive resolution between Swami Avimukteshwaranand and the Uttar Pradesh government. However, she stressed that only Shankaracharyas and learned councils have the authority to verify such religious titles, not administrative officials.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Deependra Hooda also condemned the administration’s actions. In his X post, he accused those exploiting religion for political gain of disrespecting Sanatan Dharma out of arrogance. Hooda called the demand for proof from Swami Avimukteshwaranand unacceptable and criticised the forceful treatment of priests and disruption of sacred bathing rituals. He urged the BJP to apologise and ensure the Swami is allowed to bathe with dignity.

The dispute began over ten days ago in Prayagraj, where Swami Avimukteshwaranand has been staging a protest. He told news agencies on Tuesday that the agitation will continue until the Mela concludes. He stated they will return to Prayagraj to renew their protest if necessary, insisting that their camp’s entry into the event is contingent upon being allowed to bathe respectfully at the Sangam.

The issue originated on January 17, during Mauni Amavasya at the Magh Mela in Prayagraj, when Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati arrived at the Sangam ghat with a large entourage on a palanquin. The police administration asked him to proceed without the chariot, which led to a dispute between the Swami and mela officials. The Shankaracharya accused the administration of deliberate mistreatment, and tensions escalated when he began his sit-in protest at the mela.
