UDF Faces Internal Debate Over Chief Minister Candidate Ahead of Kerala Election Results

Thiruvananthapuram, April 16: As the results of the Kerala Assembly elections draw near, tensions are rising within the Congress party regarding the potential Chief Minister candidate. Voting for the 140-member assembly concluded on April 9, and results are expected on May 4. However, excitement over a possible victory has sparked an open debate within the United Democratic Front (UDF) about the CM position.

What began as internal discussions has now spilled into public forums. Various leaders are rallying support on social media, while television channels have prominently featured the issue. Congress workers are openly backing their preferred candidates, leading to increased competition among different factions.

Key figures in this debate include VD Satheesan, KC Venugopal, and Ramesh Chennithala. Each leader has distinct factions within the party supporting them.

Supporters of KC Venugopal cite his close ties with Rahul Gandhi and his national role as significant strengths. He is being portrayed as a leader capable of uniting diverse groups.

On the other hand, VD Satheesan is viewed as a youthful and aggressive leadership option. His supporters believe he has revitalized the UDF’s campaign against the Left government.

Conversely, Ramesh Chennithala’s faction emphasizes his experience and seniority, positioning him as a natural candidate should the party return to power.

However, this open discord has raised concerns within the party. During the campaign, Congress intentionally refrained from promoting any Chief Ministerial face, stating that the high command would make the decision. Now, that balance appears to be shifting.

Reports indicate that the party leadership in Delhi is unhappy with such public disagreements. The high command has made it clear that the final decision will follow established procedures, not be swayed by social media campaigns or public statements.

There are also fears that this internal strife could send the wrong message to voters and damage the image of unity displayed during the election campaign.

Meanwhile, senior leader K. Muraleedharan expressed his displeasure, stating that such unnecessary debates are inappropriate for those who support the UDF. He urged everyone to maintain peace.

State Congress President Sani Joseph reiterated that there is a set process for selecting the Chief Minister, which will be followed in due course. He also claimed that many activities on social media are being driven by fake accounts.
