Mumbai, March 21: Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Shiv Sena-UBT President Uddhav Thackeray has challenged the state government, demanding immediate action against ‘fake gurus.’ This call to action follows the arrest of Ashok Kharat, also known as Bhondu Baba, who claimed to be an expert in cosmology and a merchant navy captain while pretending to be a spiritual leader. Recently, he was arrested by Nashik police on charges of rape involving a female follower.
Kharat’s arrest has not only exposed his fraudulent activities but has also sparked a political storm in the state.
Speaking at a press conference after inaugurating an import-export logistics course in Mumbai, Thackeray insisted that the investigation should not be limited to Kharat alone but should also uncover the political alliances that support such fraudulent spiritual leaders.
Thackeray highlighted the interconnection between politics and superstition, criticizing the current state of affairs in Maharashtra. He pointed out that although the state has strong anti-superstition and black magic laws, these laws become ineffective if the enforcers themselves follow such gurus.
He alleged that these controversies are being raised to divert public attention from more pressing issues, citing the ‘Epstein files’ and other significant scandals.
Indirectly targeting his political rivals, Thackeray remarked that those lacking merit and unable to achieve anything through their leadership are resorting to lemons, needles, and black magic.
When asked about reports that the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government had provided water facilities to Kharat’s establishment, Thackeray responded, “I have no objections—let there be a thorough investigation. We will see how deep the matter goes. Action should be taken against everyone, whether they are village babas or connected to any political party.”
Following reports that 3.9 million liters of water were sanctioned for the ashram during the MVA regime, the Shiv Sena-UBT leader adopted an aggressive stance, challenging the state government to conduct a complete inquiry.
