Seoul, March 18: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has pledged to supply crude oil to South Korea as a top priority. A senior aide to President Lee Jae-myung announced that a total of 24 million barrels of crude oil have been secured from the Gulf nation.
During a briefing after returning from a trip to the UAE, aide Kang Hoon-sik stated, βThe UAE has clearly promised that no other country will receive crude oil before South Korea, making us the ‘first priority’ in oil supply.β
According to Kang, this latest announcement means South Korea will receive a total of 24 million barrels of crude oil from the UAE, which includes an already agreed-upon 6 million barrels.
He also noted that out of 3,500 South Korean citizens temporarily residing in the UAE, 3,000 have safely returned home.
Meanwhile, President Lee Jae-myung has sent letters to leaders in Japan, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, thanking them for their cooperation in evacuating South Korean citizens from the Middle East amid instability caused by the US-Israel conflict.
In a letter sent to Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Lee expressed appreciation for Japan’s assistance in bringing 16 South Korean citizens and their family members of other nationalities to Tokyo via chartered flights last Wednesday and Friday.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung reported that Lee also acknowledged the close bilateral coordination between the two countries, as Japanese citizens were transported from Saudi Arabia to South Korea on a South Korean military aircraft.
