U.S. Senate Honors Indian-American Leader Sunil Puri

Washington, March 14: The U.S. Senate paid tribute to Indian-American businessman and philanthropist Sunil Puri. Senator Dick Durbin reminisced about Puri’s journey from a young immigrant with little money from India to becoming a civic leader who transformed Rockford, Illinois.

Durbin recounted how Puri left Mumbai to study at Rockford College, now Rockford University. During his college years, Puri took on various jobs to support himself.

“Through hard work, dedication, and a variety of odd jobs—including cleaning bedpans and laying concrete—Sunil completed his education,” Durbin stated. He also highlighted the local community’s role in supporting Puri during those early years.

“The citizens of Rockford welcomed Sunil with open arms, and in return, he spent the next four decades repaying that kindness,” Durbin added.

After graduating with a degree in accounting, Puri founded the ‘First Rockford Group,’ later known as ‘First Midwest Group,’ a real estate development company involved in several redevelopment projects in the city.

Durbin noted that this company helped transform neglected properties into thriving restaurants, offices, and warehouses.

“They have turned abandoned and forgotten buildings into flourishing spaces,” he said. He emphasized that the company’s investments fostered economic growth and job creation throughout the region.

“The investments by First Midwest have revitalized Rockford, leading to economic development and creating job opportunities for thousands in Illinois,” he remarked.

Beyond business, Durbin also mentioned Puri’s extensive philanthropic efforts in Rockford. Inspired by a lesson from his parents, Puri often spoke about the importance of giving back to the community.

“Where you smell roses, water the flowers,” Durbin quoted.

Puri donated millions and dedicated significant time to community initiatives. His contributions supported major projects, including the ‘Keeling-Puri Peace Plaza,’ the Southeast Rockford YMCA branch, and the ‘Salvation Army Puri Family Disaster Services Center.’

Durbin also referenced Puri’s advocacy for strong U.S.-India relations. He noted that Puri was “a dedicated supporter of improving U.S.-India relations” and traveled to India with Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to enhance mutual ties between the two nations.
