U.S. Lawmaker Questions Attack on Iranian University, Highlights Its Silicon Valley Ties

Washington, April 6: U.S. lawmakers are increasingly opposing military action against Iran. There is widespread sadness and anger over attacks targeting schools and universities. Among them is Democratic Congresswoman Yasmin Ansari, who condemned the recent attack on Sharif University.

Through a social media post, she questioned why Sharif University was targeted. She highlighted the university’s significance, stating, “Sharif University is like Iran’s MIT, and many engineers who graduated from here have established major tech companies in Silicon Valley.”

Ansari, of Iranian descent, asked, “Why target an educational institution in such a large city?” Earlier, Iranian media claimed that the university campus suffered significant damage from a U.S.-Israeli attack.

Ansari’s father emigrated from Iran to the U.S. in the 1970s, where he pursued his education. Her mother also moved to the U.S. in 1981 at the age of 17.

Located in Tehran, Sharif University of Technology is regarded as one of Iran’s top institutions for science and engineering. According to the state broadcaster IRIB, the university was bombed early Monday, causing considerable damage.

Established in 1966 as Aryamehr University, Sharif has been a pillar of Iran’s scientific and educational life. Reports indicate that the attack damaged university buildings and a natural gas distribution site, disrupting gas supply in surrounding areas. The IRIB reported that the university’s gas station was targeted, leading to temporary gas shortages in the Sharif area.

Iranian media reported multiple explosions throughout the night, with the sound of low-flying fighter jets heard for hours. Currently, no students are present on campus, as classes are being conducted online due to the ongoing conflict.
