
Washington, March 10: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has condemned recent attacks by Iranian and Iran-backed militia groups in Iraq. The U.S. State Department reported that this statement was made during a phone conversation with leaders from Iraq and Germany.
During his discussion with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, Rubio addressed the recent security situation in Iraq.
According to the State Department, “The Secretary condemned the terrorist attacks carried out by Iranian and Iran-backed militia groups, which also include the Kurdistan region of Iraq.”
Both leaders also talked about the safety of U.S. diplomatic personnel in Iraq. “They reiterated the importance of the Iraqi government taking all possible measures to ensure the safety of U.S. diplomatic staff and facilities.”
Washington has previously warned that attacks by Iran-backed militias pose a threat to U.S. personnel and regional allies.
Rubio also spoke with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. The focus of their discussion was on regional tensions and coordination with allies.
The State Department stated, “The Secretary outlined U.S. objectives in the region, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding U.S. personnel and allies, as well as ongoing coordination with partners.”
Both leaders discussed Iran’s role in regional instability. The statement noted that the Secretary and the German Foreign Minister addressed the current threats posed by the Iranian regime to regional stability and condemned the recent attacks.
