Trump Withdraws Canada’s Invitation from New 'Board of Peace'

Washington: US President Donald Trump has withdrawn the invitation extended to Canada to join his newly formed ‘Board of Peace’. This decision comes amid rising tensions between the two North American neighbours.

Trump announced the development via a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. Addressing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, he stated that the Board of Peace had decided to retract its invitation to Canada. However, Trump did not provide any reasons for this reversal.

Earlier, at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Trump had remarked that “Canada exists because of America.” This claim was promptly rejected by Prime Minister Carney, who emphasised the strong partnership between the two countries. Carney said, “Canada and the United States have forged a remarkable partnership—in economy, security, and cultural exchange—but Canada does not exist because of America. Canada progresses because we are Canadians.”

The Board of Peace was initiated by President Trump to promote global peace. Invitations were sent to nearly 60 countries worldwide. According to Israeli media reports, 25 countries have accepted the invitation so far. Members include Israel, Bahrain, Morocco, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Indonesia, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Pakistan, Paraguay, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Egypt, Vietnam, and Mongolia.

Notably, eight Islamic countries have agreed to join the board. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also invited to be part of the board under the second phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement in Gaza. India has not yet responded, with the Ministry of External Affairs stating that the matter is under consideration.

Meanwhile, major countries like France, the UK, China, Germany, Sweden, and Norway did not participate in the signing ceremony. Several nations including Germany, Italy, Paraguay, Russia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine have not committed to the invitation. Membership on the board is limited to a three-year term, with a reported requirement of a $1 billion payment to acquire permanent membership.
