Trump Delays Attacks on Irans Power Plants Amid Positive Talks

New York, March 24: U.S. President Donald Trump has postponed attacks on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure for five days. This decision follows two days of discussions between the U.S. and Iran.

Iran has not commented on Trump’s statement, although Tehran previously indicated it was not ready for a ceasefire.

On Sunday, a post from Trump caused a stir. He issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, stating that if the Strait of Hormuz was not opened, major Iranian power plants would be targeted. In response, Iran claimed it would not abandon any facilities operating with U.S. assistance.

The world markets reacted sharply to the emerging crisis, plummeting in response. Meanwhile, Trump stated early Monday that the U.S. had engaged in “positive and productive talks” with Iran.

He further noted, “This round of discussions will continue throughout the week. Given the positive attitude in the extensive discussions between both nations, I have instructed the U.S. Department of Defense to delay all military attacks on Iran’s power plants and energy infrastructure for the next five days.”

However, he did not specify who Washington was negotiating with.

Following the death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, Trump expressed uncertainty about who is currently in charge in Iran. Khamenei’s son, who has been chosen as the new supreme leader, has yet to appear at any public events.

Initially, Trump described the situation as a swift and decisive action aimed at dismantling Iran’s leadership, missile capabilities, and nuclear framework. However, the conflict appears to be dragging on. Meanwhile, attacks on U.S. allies in the Gulf region have occurred, and shipping through much of the Strait of Hormuz has been disrupted, exacerbating the global energy crisis.

There is also pressure from the upcoming midterm elections in the U.S. Considering the current circumstances, Trump seems to be searching for a way out of this confrontation. He recently stated he is preparing to “gradually end our large military efforts in the Middle East.” Notably, he did not mention the condition of regime change in Iran, which was previously a significant part of his stance.

Israel has not yet indicated support for any of Trump’s peace efforts. Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir stated that the war is still in its middle phase, but the direction is clear, and they will continue to fight for their future and freedom.

In a serious development, Iranian missiles breached Israel’s renowned Iron Dome defense system, targeting sensitive areas like Dimona, where nuclear facilities are located.

On Monday, Trump reiterated that the proposed attacks on Iran’s power infrastructure have been postponed due to the “serious, extensive, and constructive” atmosphere of the talks, which will continue.

He also acknowledged that he had not fully anticipated some geopolitical aspects of this conflict, particularly Iran’s response to Gulf nations.

The approximately 40-kilometer-wide Strait of Hormuz is a crucial route for nearly 20% of the world’s energy supply, and tensions there have led to a sharp rise in oil prices, impacting gasoline prices in the U.S. In response to this pressure, the Trump administration took the extraordinary step of easing some restrictions on Iranian oil purchases during wartime to keep prices in check.

Trump has also pressured other nations that use this waterway to take responsibility for its security. He stated that ultimately, the monitoring and security of the Strait of Hormuz must be handled by the countries that utilize it.

Reports indicate that Iran has allowed ships to pass for some countries, such as India and China, while warning of restrictions for others.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte announced that his organization, along with countries like South Korea, Australia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Japan, is considering options to ensure the security of this waterway.
