Indian Teams Spin Bowling Strategy Under Review Ahead of Fifth T20 Match
Indias spin bowling coach hints at possible inclusion of Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav for the next match in Hamilton.

Auckland, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : India’s spin bowling coach, Sai Raj Bahutule, stated that the team management will finalize the playing XI for the next match based on the conditions in Hamilton. He mentioned that wrist-spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, who have not yet played in this series, may get their chance.
Having already secured an unassailable lead in the series, India faced a setback in the fourth match at Eden Park on Friday. Despite winning the toss, they were outplayed by New Zealand, who made a remarkable comeback. Glenn Phillips, in superb form, scored 107 runs off 49 balls, while Michael Bracewell added 65 runs from just 25 balls. New Zealand set a formidable target of 259/7, marking their highest T20 score to date and the largest total against India in T20 history.
In response, India managed only 172/9, suffering an 87-run defeat. During the post-match press conference, Bahutule reflected on the game, saying, “Today was a different day. We played well in the previous three matches. Each pitch and condition presented unique challenges, and we learned to adapt. Our aim was to do so today, but it didn’t work out. We will decide the best combination for the next venue. They might get a chance, but we will see what happens in Hamilton.”
He added that both Kuldeep and Varun understand the need for team balance, which has kept them out of the playing XI. They are diligently preparing behind the scenes. “The important thing is that they are ready to play. It’s crucial to understand that they might not get the opportunity based on team requirements. They are well aware of this and continue to work hard. Whenever needed, they will be ready. I believe it’s just a matter of giving them a chance. I hope they will get opportunities in the next match and the upcoming ODIs,” he explained.
Bahutule confirmed that the final decision on the playing XI for the fifth T20 will be made after the team arrives in Hamilton. “We will decide after reaching Hamilton, taking into account the pitch, size of the ground, and conditions,” he said.
Discussing plans for spin bowlers, Bahutule mentioned the importance of aggressive bowling as the Men’s T20 World Cup 2028 approaches in New Zealand and Australia. However, he acknowledged that strategies may shift based on match conditions and pitch behavior.
“We encourage our bowlers to be aggressive. Sometimes, being defensive can also be an aggressive strategy. You understand? There are various situations to manage. For instance, Axar Patel excels in powerplay overs, regardless of the over he is given. With options like Varun and Kuldeep, they are prepared to bowl at any stage. Their roles change based on circumstances, and they clearly understand the team’s expectations,” he noted.
He further stated, “This is why whenever they get a chance to play and contribute, I am confident they will be fully prepared. This will help them improve and play more matches in future tournaments.” Bahutule also discussed young opener Vaibhav Suryaanshi, who is serious about his bowling but may need more time before being regularly entrusted with the ball. “I think he needs a bit more time. He is eager about his bowling and follows his routine. However, I believe he requires more time. We are trying to create as many opportunities for him as possible, but we also have experienced players who deserve their chances,” he added.
