Beijing, February 14: A significant tri-nation meeting took place in Munich, Germany, involving Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and China‘s Foreign Minister, alongside German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot.
Wang Yi stated that this inaugural meeting among the foreign ministers of China, Germany, and France is an innovative response to changing circumstances and serves as a crucial opportunity for strategic communication. The current international landscape is experiencing profound and complex changes, the most significant since World War II, presenting unprecedented challenges to global peace and development. As responsible major powers and key economies, these three nations bear significant responsibilities for global peace and development. They must adhere to the principle of mutual respect, seek consensus while managing differences, advocate for an open and cooperative value orientation, and promote mutually beneficial cooperation. This will clarify the direction for the development of China-EU relations and contribute to greater stability and certainty in a complex and volatile international situation.
Wang Yi emphasized that the 50 years of exchanges and cooperation between China and the European Union have demonstrated that both sides are partners, not adversaries. Interdependence poses no risk, and shared interests do not threaten security. China’s development presents an opportunity for Europe, and the challenges Europe faces do not stem from China. He expressed hope that Germany and France, as leading powers in the EU, would act in alignment with their interests and those of the EU as a whole. They should strive for an objective and comprehensive understanding of China, adopt rational and pragmatic policies towards China, and remain committed to maintaining the EU-China partnership. Both sides should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns, manage differences and conflicts appropriately, deepen practical cooperation, and unite to tackle global challenges.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock remarked that in the face of turbulent global conditions, Germany and France need to engage in more dialogue and communication with China than ever before. This will help build mutual trust, dispel misunderstandings, fulfill their roles as major powers, and present a unified voice. Germany values China’s significant and positive role in global affairs and looks forward to strengthening communication and coordination with China. Both Germany and France reaffirm their strong commitment to the one-China policy and their dedication to developing long-term and stable relations with China. They support free trade, oppose isolation and disruptions in supply chains, and are eager to consult with China to resolve trade tensions and promote balanced development in EU-China economic and trade relations.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot noted the increasing instability in the world today, with multilateralism and the international order under threat, and ongoing conflicts in various regions. France, China, and Germany should jointly play a role in promoting world peace and improving global governance. The more unstable the international situation becomes, the greater the need for partnership. France is committed to revitalizing stable and positive EU-China relations. It welcomes the global governance initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping and looks forward to enhancing strong coordination among multilateral platforms and maintaining multilateralism and free trade through dialogue and communication with China. France believes that relations between France and China, Germany and China, and the EU and China can progress in parallel without conflict.
