Tragic Incident in Bangladesh: Mother Dies While Saving Son from Attack

Dhaka, May 18: A mother in Bangladesh tragically lost her life while trying to save her son from an attack. The incident reportedly stemmed from a social media post linked to supporters of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

The event took place on Saturday evening in the Ukhiya sub-district of Cox’s Bazar, where 55-year-old Sayeda Begum succumbed to injuries inflicted by alleged BNP and its student wing, Chhatra Dal, activists.

According to local reports from the prominent daily, ‘The Daily Star’, a few days prior, slogans reading “Joy Bangla, Joyto Sheikh Hasina” were written on the wall of Taipalong Madrasa. Following this, local BNP leaders filed complaints against several members of the Awami League and its student organization, Chhatra League, at the Ukhiya police station.

Reports indicate that Chhatra Dal member Jisan Sikder posted about the graffiti on social media, to which a person identified as Mohammad Yunus reportedly reacted with laughter. Subsequently, several BNP and Chhatra Dal activists allegedly attacked Yunus. During the chaos, SM Imran rushed to save his friend but was also assaulted by the mob.

Family members stated that upon hearing about the attack on her son, Sayeda ran to his aid. She was pushed to the ground during the altercation. Later, she was taken to the Ukhiya health complex, where doctors pronounced her dead.

Imran accused over a dozen individuals, including local BNP president Abdur Rahim and his son Akash, as well as BNP leader Mijan Sikder and his son Jisan Sikder, of attacking him without provocation.

In an interview with ‘The Daily Star’, Imran said, “My mother ran to save me. They grabbed her by the throat and pushed her down, causing her to fall. She was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead.” He added, “We are not politically affiliated. I want justice for my mother.”

Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s son, Sajeeb Wazed, condemned the attack, calling it a “shameful” incident for any civilized society. On the social media platform X, Wazed noted, “This slogan is deeply connected to the history of Bangladesh’s liberation struggle. If these words can now threaten lives, it is not just an isolated incident but a symbol of the horrific decline of political tolerance in the state.”

He emphasized the need for concrete action, stating, “The government’s responsibility is not just to issue statements. It must ensure a fair investigation, bring the guilty to justice regardless of political affiliation, and take a clear stance against political violence. Otherwise, every new death will merely become another statistic.”
