Tragic Incident at Andhra Pradeshs Traditional Stick Fight Claims One Life, Over 100 Injured

A traditional stick fight in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, resulted in one death and over 100 injuries during the Dussehra festival.

Kurnool, October 22 (Daily Kiran) : A traditional stick fight during the Dussehra festival in Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, turned tragic when one person died and more than 100 were injured. The incident occurred late Wednesday night in Devaragattu village as part of the annual Devaragattu Banni festival.

Participants from two rival groups clashed with sticks, leading to chaos and injuries. Victims were admitted to hospitals in Adoni and Alur, with ten individuals reported in serious condition. Those with minor injuries received treatment at a temporary facility set up by local authorities. The deceased was identified as 28-year-old Potharaju from Alur.

The stick fight is a long-standing tradition held at the Malla Malleshwar Swamy temple, situated on a hill. Despite police warnings, villagers proceeded with the event, claiming it is an integral part of their customs.

During the festival, villagers divide into two groups that engage in a fierce battle for control over the idols of Goddess Mallamma and Malleshwar Swamy after a symbolic wedding ceremony at midnight. The rivalry sees participants from various villages, including Nerani, Nerani Tanda, and Kothapeta, battling against devotees from Arikera, Aluru, Suluvai, Elarthi, Nidravati, and Bilehal.

Despite police efforts to prevent the fight, the villagers remained undeterred. This year, over 1,000 police officers were deployed to maintain order. Participants believe that the event commemorates a mythological battle where Lord Shiva, in the form of Bhairav, defeated two demons named Mani and Mallasura. They reenact this event on Vijayadashami, with one group attempting to seize the idols from the opposing side.

The traditional fight draws thousands of spectators from Kurnool and neighboring states, including Telangana and Karnataka, who come to witness this unique cultural event.
