Islamabad, June 5: A tragic incident has occurred in Pakistan’s Punjab province where an 18-year-old gang rape victim lost her life. The young woman died during treatment for complications related to an illegal abortion at a government hospital.
According to reports from Pakistani media outlet Dawn, the victim, who worked as a domestic helper in Model Town, was allegedly gang-raped by the son of her employer and the family driver. An FIR and the victim’s video statement revealed that both suspects had sexually assaulted her multiple times over the past few months. The employer reportedly concealed the matter to avoid police action.
The case came to light following the victim’s death due to complications from the abortion. Police stated that she had accused her employer’s married son and the driver of the gang rape.
Sources indicate that she was initially taken to a clinic in Raiwind due to complications from medication. Doctors reported that she experienced fetal death, or miscarriage, during the illegal abortion procedure, which is a serious medical condition.
After a few weeks of rest, she was sent back home in Faisalabad. However, her condition worsened, leading to her transfer to a hospital in Lahore on May 23. A police officer confirmed that an FIR was filed based on her initial statements, naming both suspects and her employer.
Authorities mentioned that since the victim died during surgery at the hospital, murder charges have also been added to the case. One suspect, the driver, has been arrested, while the others have been granted bail.
Earlier reports from Pakistani media indicated that in March, four individuals allegedly gang-raped a woman in a van in the Baga Sheikhaan area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Rawat police. The victim’s mother filed an FIR stating that her 19-year-old daughter had gone to buy clothes for her children during Eid. After five years of marriage, she boarded a wagon to reach Rawat Bazaar.
During the journey, the conductor allegedly locked the door and diverted the vehicle towards Chak Beli Road. According to the FIR, when the victim screamed for help, the conductor subdued her. The van then proceeded towards Chak Beli Road, where one man forced her into another van, identified as “S.”
The assailants took the victim to the Baga Sheikhaan area, where they attempted to drag her inside a house. The FIR states that another accomplice was called to the scene, and the four suspects took turns assaulting her while driving around various streets in Baga Sheikhaan. They later abandoned her near Chak Beli Mor. The complainant reported that the suspects threatened her daughter and recorded the incident.
