Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : A devastating building collapse in Delhi has claimed the lives of two students from Madhya Pradesh. On September 6, shortly after 1:30 PM, 21-year-old Arpit Jaj from Devas and 19-year-old Akshat Yadav from Katni were among those trapped when the structure fell in the Satya Niketan area.
The tragedy unfolded just a day after the students returned to the capital following the festival holidays. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through their hometowns, where family and friends are grappling with the loss of young lives filled with aspirations for higher education.
Akshat, a first-year B.Com student at Delhi University, had been residing in the city for about a year and a half. His friend Krishna Rajak recounted the moment he learned of the incident. “I received the news around 7 PM yesterday. A friend called to inform me that the building where Akshat lived had collapsed. We had seen the news earlier, but we weren’t sure if it was the same building,” Rajak said. He and others rushed to Akshat’s home, where his mother and younger sister were in distress.
Neighbors described Akshat as a diligent student who completed his schooling at DPS and had recently returned to Delhi after visiting home for the holidays. “He was preparing for his future and had taken the CUET exam to enroll in B.Com Honors at Delhi University,” said neighbor Sandeep Tripathi.
Arpit, also a second-year B.Com student, hailed from Jay Bajrang Nagar near Devas. He had completed his schooling at Central India Academy and was returning to Delhi after celebrating Raksha Bandhan with his family on September 5. His father, Bhupendra Jaj, operates a travel agency in Devas.
Reports indicate that the building was nearly 40 years old and was not listed as dangerous in the records of the Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD). This incident raises significant concerns regarding the safety and monitoring of older structures in densely populated areas.
The community mourns the loss of two bright futures, as families and friends come to terms with the tragic event that has forever altered their lives.
