
Srinagar, March 27: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic deaths of six individuals due to an avalanche at Zojila Pass. In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh also took to X, expressing his sadness over the unfortunate incident. He extended his sympathies to the affected families and assured that all necessary assistance is being provided to the injured.
Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, V.K. Saxena, shared his concerns on X, stating that he received the distressing news of the avalanche at Zojila. He has ordered the District Commissioner and SSP of Kargil to immediately commence rescue and relief operations. All government agencies, including the Disaster Relief Force and BRO, have been placed on high alert, and he is personally monitoring the situation.
Officials reported that a significant avalanche occurred on Friday on the Srinagar-Leh Highway towards Ladakh, burying several vehicles under snow. Initially, it was stated that there were no casualties, but later reports confirmed that during the rescue operation, several vehicles were found completely buried, resulting in six fatalities. Five others were rescued and taken to the hospital in injured condition.
Following the incident, the highway was blocked, and a rescue and clearance operation was initiated to remove debris and restore traffic. A tunnel is being constructed at Zojila Pass, which, once operational, will provide secure connectivity between the Union Territory of Ladakh and the rest of the country throughout the year.
