Raipur, May 12: A tragic accident in Rajhara, located in Chhattisgarh’s Balod district, resulted in the deaths of three workers on Tuesday. The incident occurred during a project to lay sewer pipes for the Bhilai Steel Plant, near the busy Das Pan Thela Chowk.
The workers were engaged in deep excavation when a sudden landslide caused surrounding soil to collapse on them, burying them alive. They were working in a pit approximately 10 feet deep, positioning heavy sewer pipes when the walls of soil unexpectedly gave way.
Police officials reported that the impact and weight of the debris were so severe that all three individuals succumbed to their injuries before help could arrive. The deceased have been identified as Kishan Kumar and Rakesh Kumar, along with a female worker named Baishakheen.
There are concerns that another worker may still be trapped under the rubble, although police have not yet confirmed this.
The news of the landslide spread quickly, creating an atmosphere of grief and shock in the local community and nearby residential areas. Local police and municipal officials rushed to the scene to initiate rescue operations upon receiving reports of the accident.
Using specialized equipment, teams worked to remove the fallen soil and safely recover the bodies from the pit. The remains of the three victims have been sent for legal formalities and post-mortem examinations.
Authorities have dispatched the workers’ bodies for post-mortem analysis. Local officials are expected to provide financial assistance to the families of the deceased and investigate whether adequate support or safety measures were in place to prevent such landslides.
Work on the sewer line project has been temporarily halted following the accident.
