Trump Unveils New Seafood Labeling Initiative to Support American Fishermen

President Trump announces a new seafood labeling plan aimed at supporting American fishermen and distinguishing domestic products.

Fort Myers, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : President Donald Trump has announced a new labeling initiative for seafood produced in the United States. The goal is to give American fishermen and the seafood industry a competitive edge against foreign producers.

This announcement was made during a Republican rally in Fort Myers, Florida. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. accused some foreign seafood producers of using environmentally harmful practices, allowing their products to enter the U.S. market and harm American fishermen.

Kennedy stated that the government will introduce a new label indicating whether seafood is sourced domestically or from abroad. “Today, the President is unveiling a label that will inform consumers that this product is made in America, enabling them to make informed choices,” he said.

Trump described this initiative as part of a broader effort to support the marine industry along Florida’s Gulf Coast. He remarked, “Today, we are taking historic steps in support of a vital industry along the Gulf of America.” He then invited Kennedy to elaborate on the plan and praised his long-standing connection with fishing communities.

Kennedy emphasized that American fishermen must adhere to the world’s strictest environmental and sustainable production regulations, putting them at a disadvantage compared to foreign producers who are not bound by such rules. “This country’s commercial fishermen face the toughest environmental regulations. They also have stringent standards for sustainable production, making competition with foreign fishermen challenging,” he noted.

He specifically referenced shrimp production in Vietnam and Cambodia, alleging that some producers damage mangrove forests and use chemicals that are banned in many foreign markets. He claimed that in some areas, mangroves are fenced off, leading to the depletion of local fish populations and significant environmental impacts from prolonged shrimp farming. He asserted that shrimp produced through these methods contain high levels of antibiotics and disinfectants.

“These shrimp have such high antibiotic and disinfectant levels that many European countries refuse to accept them,” Kennedy stated. He claimed that these products are later shipped to the U.S., where domestic shrimp producers must compete with low-priced imports. However, no evidence was provided to support these allegations against foreign producers during his speech.

Kennedy highlighted the significance of the pink shrimp industry in Fort Myers and Florida, describing it as a crucial hub for the U.S. commercial fishing industry. He mentioned that the government is working to strengthen the infrastructure related to the fishing industry and increase market opportunities for domestic producers.

According to Kennedy, the new label will help consumers understand whether the seafood products they purchase are genuinely made in America. However, Trump and Kennedy did not specify when this new labeling initiative will be implemented. They also did not clarify whether the labeling would be mandatory or voluntary.

Additionally, it remains unclear which federal agency will oversee the initiative and what standards products must meet to be labeled as ‘American-made.’ Identifying the country of origin and labeling for seafood products is a significant issue in international trade, as it directly impacts consumer preferences, market access, and business costs.
