Srinagar, 2 January. Authorities in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir have imposed a ban on trekking, camping, hiking, and similar outdoor activities in the higher areas and forests of Kokernag, citing security concerns.
The order issued by the SDM of Kokernag refers to recent incidents where some individuals attempted to cross checkpoints during late night hours, raising serious public safety concerns. It also mentions that unrestricted movement and outdoor activities in areas such as Margan Top, Chauhar Nag, and Sinthan Top could negatively impact public safety and security.
The order states that I, Prince Kumar, Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kokernag, exercising powers under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS), 2023, hereby direct an immediate ban on trekking, camping, hiking, and all other similar outdoor activities in the Margan Top, Chauhar Nag, and Sinthan Top areas.
The SDM’s order further instructs the Larnu Station House Officer to strictly enforce this directive and regulate movement at checkpoints. The general public has been advised to comply fully with this order. Any violation will lead to action as per law.
The prohibition will remain in effect for two months from the date of issuance unless revoked earlier or extended according to legal provisions.
This directive comes at a time when joint security forces are conducting large-scale counter-terrorism operations in the upper areas of Poonch, Rajouri, and Kishtwar districts in the Jammu division. The Kokernag area in the valley is connected to Kishtwar district through Sinthan Top.
These joint operations target terrorists, their overground workers (OGWs), and sympathisers. The coordinated effort aims not only to neutralise armed militants but also to dismantle the entire support system of terrorism.
