TMCs Sougata Roy Rebuts CM Suvendus Remarks on Teachers Political Involvement

TMC leader Sougata Roy criticizes West Bengal CM Suvendu for restricting teachers from political participation, calling it undemocratic.

Kolkata, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : Senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy has responded strongly to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s recent comments suggesting that newly appointed school teachers should refrain from engaging in politics. Roy labeled the statement as an affront to democracy, asserting that it aims to silence dissenting voices.

He emphasized that teachers play a crucial role in society and excluding them from the political process is fundamentally undemocratic. Roy expressed his hope that the entire teaching community would unite in opposition to this directive.

In reaction to the arrest of former tourism minister Indranil Sen, linked to the UNESCO tag controversy, Roy stated, “I am not fully aware of the details, but it is evident that the BJP government is systematically targeting TMC leaders.” He condemned the actions as politically motivated and driven by a spirit of revenge.

Addressing allegations from Suvendu Adhikari that the situation benefits Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Roy questioned the rationale behind such claims. “What Suvendu Adhikari says is unpredictable. If anyone is involved, appropriate legal actions should be taken, but there is no need for unnecessary statements,” he remarked.

When asked about Mamata Banerjee’s participation in the upcoming India Alliance rally, Roy confirmed her attendance, stating, “As far as I know, Mamata Banerjee will join the protest rally at Ramleela Maidan in Delhi on November 1.”

Additionally, he commented on Union Minister Kiren Rijiju’s derogatory remarks about actor Naseeruddin Shah, calling them unfounded. “What Kiren Rijiju says is nonsense. Naseeruddin Shah is a highly respected actor who has expressed his feelings. The BJP does not appreciate such freedom of expression, which is why they raise such issues,” Roy concluded.
