
Kolkata, May 4: The results for the Kolkata Port Assembly seat in West Bengal are in. Firhad Hakim of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has secured victory by a margin of 56,080 votes. With these election results, this seat has once again become a focal point in state politics, where TMC has maintained dominance for an extended period.
Firhad Hakim received 101,226 votes, while his closest rival, Rakesh Singh from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), garnered 45,146 votes. Additionally, Fayaz Ahmed Khan from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) received a mere 2,571 votes.
This general category seat, part of the Kolkata South Lok Sabha constituency, is considered a significant aspect of urban politics. Since 2011, the TMC has consistently won here, with senior leader Firhad Hakim representing the seat. He has served as a minister in the state government and has been the Mayor of Kolkata since 2018. The TMC’s grip on this seat has strengthened since 2011, when Hakim first won, and he has increased his margin of victory in subsequent elections in 2016 and 2021.
Data from the Lok Sabha elections also supports this trend. Since 2009, the TMC has maintained a lead in this area. Although the BJP posed a challenge in 2014, the TMC regained its stronghold in 2019 and 2024, with the BJP remaining in second place.
The history of this seat is equally intriguing. From 1952 to 2006, it was known as the Garden Reach seat, having undergone 14 assembly elections. The Congress party dominated in the early decades, winning eight times, while left parties secured victories six times. After delimitation in 2011, the name was changed to Kolkata Port, incorporating 13 wards of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
Demographically, this seat holds significant importance. According to 2024 data, there are over 200,000 voters, with the Muslim community constituting the largest voting bloc at approximately 51.80%. Geographically, it is a densely populated urban seat, including areas such as Garden Reach, Metiabruz, Kidderpore, and Khidirpur. This region, located along the banks of the Hooghly River, is known for its ports, shipyards, docks, and warehouses.
