New Delhi, May 4: In a significant political event, Javed Ahmed Khan of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has won the Kasba Assembly seat in West Bengal for the fourth consecutive time. He defeated BJP’s candidate, Sandeep Banerjee, by a margin of over 20,000 votes.
Khan received 117,893 votes, while Banerjee garnered 96,919 votes, resulting in a victory margin of 20,974 votes. The CPI(M) and Congress candidates finished in third and fourth places, respectively.
The Kasba Assembly seat is considered one of the key urban constituencies in the South 24 Parganas district and is politically significant within the Kolkata metropolitan area. This seat falls under the Kolkata South parliamentary constituency, which is currently represented by TMC’s Mala Roy. The 2026 Assembly elections showcased a competitive atmosphere in Kasba.
Several prominent candidates contested in the 2026 Assembly elections. The TMC relied on the incumbent MLA, Javed Ahmed Khan, while the BJP nominated Sandeep Banerjee. The CPI(M) fielded Dipu Das, and the Congress put forth Mohammad Hasim Jishan Ahmed as their candidate.
Additionally, independent and candidates from other parties participated, but the main contest was primarily between the TMC, BJP, and the Left Front.
The Kasba Assembly seat was established after the delimitation process in 2011, previously falling under different electoral boundaries. The current form of this seat was defined after the 2006 delimitation, with the first Assembly elections held here in 2011.
Since its inception, the TMC has maintained a stronghold on the Kasba seat. Javed Ahmed Khan has won here in 2011, 2016, and 2021, marking a significant representation for the TMC in this constituency.
The voter turnout for the 2026 Assembly elections in Kasba was approximately 70 to 71 percent, which is considered a good turnout for urban seats in Kolkata.
While the TMC has a solid base in Kasba, the BJP and the Left Front have been working to strengthen their presence. The competition remained engaging in the 2026 elections.
