Mukundpur, September 23 (Daily Kiran) : Kolkata’s political landscape was shaken on September 23 when TMC MP Sougata Roy condemned an alleged assault on women leaders by BJP activists in Mukundpur. The incident reportedly occurred during a rally organized by local TMC workers, where BJP members are accused of attacking the participants.
Roy expressed his outrage over the incident, stating that women leaders Upasana Chaudhary and Priyanka Chaudhary were targeted. He claimed that the BJP’s actions reflect a broader issue of lawlessness in West Bengal. “I strongly condemn this. Wherever there are processions, BJP members attack them and mistreat participants,” he stated.
The confrontation escalated when former MLA Humayun Kabir attempted to intervene. Roy reported that Kabir was also assaulted during the incident. He urged all democratic parties to denounce such violence.
In addition to commenting on the Mukundpur incident, Roy criticized the Special Intensive Review (SIR) process of the electoral rolls, arguing that it unjustly removes legitimate voters. He welcomed objections raised by Election Commission members regarding this procedure and called for decisive action from the central government.
Roy also addressed the recent appointment of Jyotiprakash Chattopadhyay as the national president of the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI), questioning the legitimacy of the party’s formation and the Speaker’s approval. He mentioned that petitions have been filed against 20 NCPI MPs, emphasizing the ongoing political tensions in the region.
