New Delhi, February 5: Indian all-rounder Tilak Varma has recently made his return to the national team after recovering from an injury. He expressed gratitude towards the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Centre of Excellence for their support, which enabled his early comeback to the field.
Inspired by the aggressive batting around him, Tilak noted the team’s atmosphere was fantastic. He also mentioned that he and the entire Indian squad feel fully prepared for the upcoming World Cup.
Tilak shared that the packed crowd at DY Patil Stadium and the chants of his name boosted his confidence, even though it was just a warm-up match. India triumphed over South Africa by 30 runs in a high-scoring warm-up match held in Navi Mumbai, marking a strong finish to their World Cup preparations.
“I honestly didn’t expect to return to the field so soon. I sincerely thank the Centre of Excellence and BCCI for this opportunity. Playing in the World Cup has always been my biggest dream. When I stepped onto the field and heard the crowd chanting ‘Tilak-Tilak,’ it was unexpected and made me feel great, enhancing my enthusiasm,” he said.
He further added that watching the aggressive batting of Ishan, Abhishek, and the other players ignited his own passion to play. Tilak was pleasantly surprised by the large turnout, as the DY Patil Stadium was completely packed for a warm-up match. He thanked all the fans for creating a wonderful atmosphere and reiterated that he and the entire Indian team are ready for the World Cup.
Opting to bat first, the host team delivered an impressive performance. Ishan Kishan scored a rapid 53 runs off just 20 balls, giving India a stellar start alongside Abhishek Sharma, with the team reaching 80/1 within six overs. Both openers retired to allow others a chance to bat.
Tilak scored 45 runs off 19 balls, forming a quick partnership of 66 runs with captain Suryakumar Yadav. Contributions from Axar Patel, Rinku Singh, and a blistering 30 runs off 10 balls from Hardik Pandya propelled India to a formidable total of 240 runs for the loss of 5 wickets.
South Africa’s innings began poorly, with Arshdeep Singh dismissing George Linde for a duck. Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickelton attempted to stabilize the innings with a partnership of 65 runs. However, after Markram’s retirement, quick wickets of Dewald Brevis, Rickelton, and David Miller shifted the momentum entirely in India’s favor. Despite resilient contributions from Jason Smith, Tristan Stubbs, and Marco Jansen, South Africa fell short by 30 runs.
India now turns its focus to the World Cup opener against the USA on Saturday.
