Three Indian Players Who Won Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup

New Delhi, March 9: Sanju Samson has made headlines by scoring 321 runs at an impressive average of 80.25 in five innings during the T20 World Cup 2026. His outstanding performance earned him the title of ‘Player of the Tournament,’ making him the third Indian to achieve this honor. Let’s take a closer look at all the Indian players who have won this prestigious award.

Virat Kohli: The legendary batsman has claimed the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title twice, in the T20 World Cups of 2014 and 2016. He is the only Indian to have won this award on two occasions. In the 2014 tournament, Kohli was the highest run-scorer, amassing 319 runs at an average of 106.33, including 10 sixes and 24 fours. He repeated this feat in 2016, where he scored 273 runs at an average of 136.50, finishing as the second-highest run-scorer of that edition.

Jasprit Bumrah: India clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 title thanks to Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling. In that tournament, Bumrah played eight matches, bowled 29.4 overs, and took 15 wickets for 124 runs. Although Arshdeep Singh topped the wicket-takers list with 17 wickets, Bumrah’s remarkable performance in the death overs earned him the ‘Player of the Series’ title.

Sanju Samson: At the beginning of the year, during the T20 series against New Zealand, this right-handed player faced criticism for his lackluster performance. In the first two matches of the T20 World Cup 2026, he scored only 22 and 24 runs, raising doubts about his place in the playing XI. However, he proved his critics wrong. In the crucial Super-8 match against the West Indies, Samson scored an unbeaten 97 runs, securing India a spot in the semifinals. In the knockout match against England, he contributed significantly with 89 runs, leading India to victory. In the final against New Zealand, he showcased his form again, scoring 89 runs and becoming the hero of the match. Throughout the tournament, Sanju played five matches, scoring 321 runs at an average of 80.25, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer.
