The Seven Dhatus: Unlocking the Secret to True Health

New Delhi, April 22: True health and beauty stem not just from external care or expensive products but from within our bodies. According to Ayurveda, genuine radiance emerges when the seven dhatus are in balance. While many are familiar with the concept of the three doshas, the seven dhatus play a crucial role in the body’s functioning alongside them.

The significance of the seven dhatus is well-documented in Ayurveda and the Charaka Samhita. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, mood swings, loss of facial glow, and rapid hair loss can indicate an imbalance in these dhatus. The Charaka Samhita states, “Dhatuvo hi dehadharana poshan vriddhya,” meaning that the dhatus sustain, nourish, and enhance the body. Let’s explore what these seven dhatus are and how their imbalance affects our health.

The first dhatu is Rasa dhatu. This is the primary and most essential dhatu, helping maintain energy flow in the body, formed through the digestion of food. It ensures moisture retention within the body. The second is Rakta dhatu, considered the foundation of life. It nourishes all body parts and maintains their redness.

The third is Mamsa dhatu, which brings stability to the body and is related to muscle health. It is composed of the fire and earth elements, helping maintain the body’s shape. The fourth dhatu is Meda dhatu, representing fat and aiding in hormonal balance. Meda dhatu is formed after Mamsa dhatu. An imbalance in Meda dhatu can lead to symptoms like obesity, fatigue, joint pain, and physical weakness.

The fifth dhatu is Asthi dhatu, which protects the bones, nails, and teeth, providing stability to the body. The sixth dhatu, Majja, safeguards the nervous system and brain, also offering protection to the eyes. Finally, the seventh dhatu is Shukra, associated with reproductive health, preserving facial radiance and vitality.

Understanding the seven dhatus is essential for maintaining overall well-being and vitality.
