New Delhi, March 20: The Indian Premier League (IPL) has seen 18 seasons, but only one wicketkeeper holds the record for taking five catches in a single match. Let’s delve into the details of this remarkable player and the match itself.

Kumar Sangakkara achieved this feat on April 14, 2011, while captaining the Deccan Chargers against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The match took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

In this IPL 2011 encounter, the Deccan Chargers batted first, scoring 175 runs after losing five wickets. Bharat Chipli played a notable innings, remaining unbeaten on 61 runs off 35 balls. Sangakkara contributed 36 runs, while Sunny Sohail added 38 runs. JP Duminy chipped in with 22 runs. For the opposition, Zaheer Khan was the standout bowler, taking three wickets, with Johan van der Wath and Ryan Ninan each claiming one.

In response, RCB managed only 142 runs, losing nine wickets in the process. Virat Kohli was the top scorer for RCB, making 71 runs off 51 balls, including three sixes and five fours. Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal contributed 25 and 16 runs, respectively. Unfortunately, no other batsman reached double figures.

During the match, Kumar Sangakkara showcased his exceptional wicketkeeping skills by catching Tilakaratne Dilshan (7), AB de Villiers (0), Saurabh Tiwary (7), Johan van der Wath (0), and Ryan Ninan (3). Thanks to Sangakkara’s outstanding performance behind the stumps, the Chargers secured a 33-run victory. Dale Steyn and Manpreet Gony each took three wickets for the Deccan Chargers, while Ishant Sharma, Dan Christian, and Amit Mishra claimed one wicket each.
