New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The auspicious festival of Sharadiya Navratri is just around the corner, set to begin on October 11, following Mahalaya on October 10. This nine-day celebration honors the nine forms of the goddess Durga, representing divine power. According to religious beliefs, it is on Mahalaya that Goddess Durga descended to Earth, leading to her fierce battle against the demon Mahishasura.
In ancient tales, Mahishasura was born from the union of a celestial being named Rambha and a buffalo, making him half-man and half-buffalo. A devoted follower of Lord Brahma, Mahishasura received a boon that no god or demon could defeat him.
Empowered by this blessing, Mahishasura began to terrorize the gods of heaven and wreak havoc on Earth. He launched a surprise attack on Indra, the king of the gods, overpowering him and seizing control of heaven, driving all the deities away. The distressed gods sought help from the Trimurti—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva—but they too were unable to defeat him.
With no other options left, the gods called upon Goddess Durga, also known as Adi Shakti and Mata Parvati. Armed with Shiva’s trident, Vishnu’s discus, and a lion from the Himalayas, she embodied the collective strength and fury of the gods, instilling fear in the hearts of demons just by her presence.
For nine days, Durga battled Mahishasura. The demon fought valiantly, changing forms into a buffalo, lion, human, and elephant in an attempt to outsmart her. On the tenth day, known as Vijayadashami, Durga finally vanquished Mahishasura, piercing him with her trident as he attempted to revert to human form, only to materialize halfway.
This victory is commemorated by the Hindu community through the grand festival of Durga Puja, symbolizing the triumph of righteousness over wrongdoing and good over evil. Mahishasura’s downfall serves as a reminder that unchecked pride can lead to one’s demise. He represents the insatiable desires within us, where one wish leads to another. True victory lies in mastering these desires.
