The Importance of Light Meals at Night According to Ayurveda

New Delhi, March 4: Ayurveda considers food to be the foundation of health. The scriptures provide clear guidelines regarding meals consumed at night. Many wonder whether it is advisable to eat at night, but Ayurveda fully endorses nighttime meals, provided they are light, easily digestible, and consumed at the right time.

Light meals at night can aid in longevity and maintaining good health. Heavy meals can lead to a tamasic state of mind. Eating at irregular times can disrupt digestive fire, potentially causing diseases in the long run. Warm and fresh food also helps prevent infections.

Ayurveda does not recommend complete fasting for everyone. Those with weak digestion should consume small amounts of light food. Complete fasting should only be done under expert guidance.

The main principle is to protect the digestive fire (agni). During the day, the sun’s heat keeps the digestive fire strong, but it diminishes after sunset. Thus, heavy meals at night can weaken this fire. The Charaka Samhita clearly states, “Laghusnigdham cha raatrau bhojanam,” meaning one should have light, easily digestible food at night.

Similarly, the Ashtanga Hridayam states, “Raatrau tu laghu bhunjit,” indicating that light meals are beneficial at night. These rules are thousands of years old but align with modern scientific understanding. Metabolism slows down at night, making it difficult to digest heavy, fried, sweet, or large quantities of food. This can lead to issues such as heaviness, gas, bloating, acidity, weight gain, and disturbed sleep.

According to Ayurveda, nighttime meals should be light, warm, fresh, and easily digestible, with portion sizes kept small. Ayurveda experts recommend dishes like moong dal khichdi, light dal-vegetable with thin roti or porridge, vegetable or moong soup, and warm milk for evening meals.

Ayurveda practitioners advise avoiding certain foods at night. One should steer clear of yogurt, non-vegetarian dishes, fried items, sweets, and stale food.

Timing of meals is also crucial. It is recommended to eat within 2-3 hours after sunset and finish eating at least 2 hours before bedtime. This allows for better digestion and promotes deep sleep. The ideal time for dinner is considered to be between 6 PM and 8 PM.
