New Delhi, February 25: It’s common to crave something cold and sweet after a meal. Ice cream, in particular, brings instant joy to many. However, indulging in ice cream after dinner can be detrimental to your health. According to science, consuming ice cream at night can lead to various health issues.

Ayurveda suggests that nighttime is a period of rest for the body. During this time, digestion slows down. Ice cream is cold, heavy, and sweet, which Ayurveda associates with increasing ‘Kapha’ dosha. Eating it at night can weaken digestive fire, leading to improper digestion and the formation of toxins in the body. This can result in gas, acidity, a heavy stomach, and lethargy.

From a scientific perspective, ice cream contains high levels of sugar and fat. Eating it at night can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar, followed by a sudden drop. These fluctuations significantly impact sleep quality. Research indicates that consuming excessive sugar before bedtime raises insulin levels, causing frequent awakenings during the night.

Additionally, eating ice cream at night increases the risk of weight gain. With minimal physical activity during this time, the extra calories from ice cream are likely to be stored as fat. This is why individuals who indulge in ice cream nightly may experience rapid weight gain, which can lead to diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart-related diseases.

Nighttime ice cream consumption is also harmful for digestive health. Many people report experiencing acidity, heartburn, and stomach pain after eating ice cream at night. Cold foods can relax the stomach muscles, allowing acid to rise. For those already suffering from gas or acid reflux, eating ice cream at night can be particularly dangerous.
