
Bamako, April 27: Mali’s Defense Minister, Sadio Camara, has been killed in an attack at his residence in the town of Kati, located near the capital, Bamako. Local sources indicate that armed terrorist groups targeted him.
Reports from unnamed sources reveal that multiple cities across the country faced coordinated attacks on Saturday, resulting in 16 injuries. The attack on Minister Camara’s home also led to the death of his second wife.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the government issued a statement on Saturday evening confirming that attacks occurred in various locations, including Kati, Sevare, Gao, Kidal, and the capital, Bamako.
The statement further noted that the injured have been hospitalized, and property damage has been limited. However, the government had not officially confirmed the minister’s death by Sunday.
The General Staff of the Malian army announced on Sunday that search operations against terrorists are ongoing in Kidal, Kati, and other areas, initiated following the attacks on Saturday.
In a separate statement, the army emphasized that these attacks aim to undermine the country’s security and spread fear and chaos.
In response, security alerts have been heightened nationwide, curfews imposed, extensive patrolling increased, and checkpoints reinforced to enhance safety. The General Staff reiterated the army’s commitment to safeguarding national security and territorial integrity.
They urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities immediately.
Meanwhile, the Indian embassy in Mali has advised all Indian nationals residing in the country to exercise caution. This advisory was issued following the recent spate of attacks on Saturday.
The embassy emphasized that given the current security situation and the attacks in Kati and surrounding areas, all Indian citizens should stay alert, take precautions, remain indoors, and strictly follow the directives of the Malian government.
The embassy also stated that they are monitoring the situation in collaboration with Malian authorities and will provide further updates as necessary.
