Kolkata, March 24: Tensions escalated in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal following the discovery of a local BJP worker’s body on Tuesday. The party claims it to be a political murder, while police have arrested the victim’s wife and her lover based on a family complaint.
The deceased has been identified as Kishore Majhi, 39, who served as the vice-president of the BJP unit for booth number 216. The incident occurred in the Mena area of the Dighirpar Bakultala gram panchayat within the Raidhighi assembly constituency. Local residents found Kishore in a bloodied state near a pond close to his home late Monday night. He was rushed to Raidhighi Rural Hospital but was declared dead by doctors upon arrival.
Upon receiving the report, police arrived at the scene and sent the body for autopsy. They initially detained three individuals for questioning. Later, Kishore Majhi’s wife, Anima Das, and her lover, Gobind Halder, were arrested.
Police stated that these actions were taken based on a complaint filed by Kishore Majhi’s father. The investigation is ongoing. The victim’s sister-in-law mentioned, “Gobind Halder, our neighbor, is responsible. There were frequent disputes between him and the family due to his illicit relationship. We don’t believe there’s any political angle involved.”
Sundarbans Superintendent of Police Bishwajit Thakur confirmed that interrogations of the arrested individuals are still in progress. Following the news, BJP candidate Palash Rana from the Raidhighi assembly constituency visited Kishore Majhi’s home on Tuesday morning.
Palash Rana alleged, “The police and local Trinamool leadership are downplaying the case by claiming it’s merely about an illicit relationship. If they attempt to cover up this murder, our efforts will not cease. The BJP will continue its movement until justice is served.”
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has completely rejected the allegations against them. Trinamool MP Bapi Halder from Mathurapur stated, “The BJP is exploiting this issue to take advantage of a difficult situation. In reality, this is a love triangle. The BJP is wrongly trying to blame the Trinamool for this.”
