Tensions Rise in Bihar NDA Over Independent MLCs Supporting BJP

Tensions escalate in Bihars NDA as independent MLCs back BJP, prompting questions of ethics and party loyalty.

Patna, November 3 (Daily Kiran) : Following the results of the Bihar Legislative Council elections for teacher and graduate seats, tensions have emerged within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The controversy centers around independent Members of the Legislative Council (MLCs) pledging support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has sparked discontent within the Janata Dal (United) or JD(U).

Bihar BJP President Sanjay Sarawagi confirmed that the two independent MLCs have indeed extended their support to the BJP. This situation forced the JD(U) to postpone a planned press conference by its candidate, Abhishek Jha, who is also the party’s spokesperson for the Tirhut graduate constituency. The decision came after phone calls from Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and JD(U) National Executive President Sanjay Kumar Jha.

Jha was scheduled to address the media but will now speak after a JD(U) review meeting on November 5. The crux of the dispute revolves around the support of independent MLCs Banshidhar Brajwasi and Rahul Raj for the BJP. After winning their elections, both announced their intention to join the BJP, but later characterized their actions as mere support due to concerns over their membership status in the Legislative Council.

Opposition parties have criticized this move, claiming it violates constitutional and anti-defection laws. Chirag Paswan, leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) and a central minister, has raised ethical questions regarding the situation. He expressed confusion over the relevance of coalition dharma, stating that it ultimately depends on individual choices regarding party support. However, he acknowledged that legal constraints might prevent joining a party, making ethics a significant consideration.

JD(U) President Umesh Kushwaha has also voiced concerns, particularly regarding Rahul Raj’s return to the BJP after being expelled for six years. He questioned the rationale behind the party’s swift decision to reinstate a leader shortly after an electoral victory.

In light of these developments, Sarawagi reiterated that both independent MLCs have shown faith in the policies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Samrat Chaudhary. His remarks are seen as an attempt by the BJP to clarify its position amid rising tensions with the JD(U), despite prior agreements on seat allocations for the Legislative Council elections.

The issue of independent candidates supporting the BJP has reignited discussions about political dynamics within the alliance. With JD(U) discontent and opposition allegations, all eyes are now on the upcoming party review meeting on November 5, where the election results and the independent MLCs’ support for the BJP are expected to be key topics of discussion.
