Tensions Escalate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Protests Turn Deadly

A protest against governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa turns violent, resulting in one death and multiple injuries amid rising political tensions.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, October 14 (Daily Kiran) : Protests erupted in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on October 14, 2026, in response to the imposition of governor rule. During the demonstrations organized by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, police opened fire, leading to the death of one individual and injuries to several others. Local media reports indicate that the political climate in the province has become increasingly tense following the declaration of a state of emergency by the federal government.

The situation deteriorated sharply after the federal government announced the emergency and instituted governor rule, effectively suspending the operations of the PTI-led provincial government, which includes imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Videos circulating on social media show armed security forces firing on the streets, with people fleeing in panic. Other footage captures police officers beating protesters with batons; however, the authenticity of these videos has not been independently verified.

According to local media, the protests turned violent on Tuesday, with demonstrators setting fire to a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office in the Bara Bazaar area. Reports also suggest that around 15 police officers were taken hostage during the unrest.

PTI lawmaker Iqbal Afridi claimed that 11 party workers were injured, and one was killed, although these casualties have not been independently confirmed by other sources. Police officer Waqas Ahmed stated that hundreds of PTI supporters gathered in Bara Bazaar to protest against the governor rule. In an attempt to disperse the crowd, police deployed tear gas and reportedly fired shots.

Tensions escalated again about 90 minutes later when a larger group of protesters, led by provincial assembly member Abdul Ghani, marched from Minar Chowk to Bara Chowk, chanting anti-government slogans. Ahmed reported that upon reaching the intersection, the protesters vandalized government property and set traffic signs ablaze.

The situation further intensified when protesters allegedly took 15 police officers hostage inside the Tehsil municipal office, seizing their weapons and uniforms. Witnesses reported at least five protesters were injured, and police arrested around 50 individuals for allegedly inciting unrest.

A doctor at Hayatabad Medical Complex, one of Peshawar’s major hospitals, confirmed to Dawn that over a dozen injured individuals were admitted, including four police officers. The protests were a direct response to the imposition of governor rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rendering PTI leader Sohail Afridi’s role as the provincial chief minister ineffective.
