Tension Escalates in Bhawanipur as TMC and BJP Exchange Accusations

Kolkata, March 21: Tensions flared in Bhawanipur, the constituency of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Saturday amid allegations of poster vandalism. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being behind the incident.

In response, the BJP claimed that the vandalism was a result of internal conflicts within the TMC. Both parties have filed separate complaints at the Kalighat police station regarding the incident.

According to police reports, TMC had put up posters in various areas of Bhawanipur as part of their preparations for the upcoming assembly elections. However, allegations arose on Saturday afternoon that BJP members had torn down these posters near Chakraberiya Road.

Following the incident, local TMC workers, led by Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor Asim Basu, staged a protest in front of the Bhawanipur police station. They later submitted a written complaint naming several BJP workers.

Basu stated, “We had obtained all necessary permissions to display these banners and posters. We later learned that some individuals had torn them down. We immediately informed the police, who arrived at the scene before us. When we finally got there, we found not only the ‘Boycott BJP’ posters were destroyed, but also the hoardings and banners put up to ensure the Chief Minister’s victory.”

Earlier in the day, the BJP had made similar allegations, claiming that TMC supporters had vandalized banners and posters featuring opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari. The TMC has since denied these claims.

Bhawanipur is a crucial constituency in the upcoming assembly elections. The BJP has nominated Suvendu Adhikari as a candidate from Bhawanipur, in addition to Nandigram. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is also set to kick off her campaign from Bhawanipur on Monday. It remains to be seen how the political contest unfolds in this significant constituency.
